At the Burning Man 2022 RAT (Renewables for Art Team) Symposium, we learned that Burning Man each year generates 52,000 tonnes of carbon mostly from transportation and generators powered by fossil fuels. For safety reasons the 400+ art installations at Burning Man have to be lit at night, and most of them are powered by gas or diesel generators emitting carbon and noise pollution. The Burning Man organization's goal is to reduce that number by 10% in 2023 and initiate transition to renewable energy. Sanctuaria is proud to integrate BIPV (Building Integrated Photovoltaic) tiles and panels as part of our design and construction. We are being guided and advised by innovators in renewable energy, led by LAGI (Land Art Generator Initiative, a leading think tank in regenerative art and architecture) to ensure that Sanctuaria remains beautiful and inviting as we generate power from the sun to power our lighting and audio systems. Surplus energy Sanctuaria produces will be shared with our communities.
Sanctuaria is adopting circular construction principles in our mission to maintain a minimal carbon footprint, and support a circular economy-- eliminate waste and pollution, circulate products and materials, and benefit society and the environment. Our builders and fabrication partners are aiding Sanctuaria in our mission to bring a regenerative art installation using sustainable and up cycled materials.
The ANIMALIA theme for Burning Man 2023 inspired us to connect with our inner mammals and think of environments many species call home. Animals from the islands of the Philippines to jungles of Mexico from the Canadian Rockies to the Deserts of Jordan, including under the seas take shelter and dwell in caves. Sanctuaria's biophilic design and use of sustainable materials in our construction ensure a minimal carbon footprint.
Footpaths leading to the entrance to Sanctuaria will be constructed from recycled plastic bottles. Our centerpiece tree is up cycled and borrowed art from a previous exhibit by artist Charles Gadeken.
A watering hole replica will welcome Animalia and provide a place to rest, cool off, and contemplate, reminiscent of watering holes around the world where animals of many species gather with their families. The oasis within Sanctuaria will also double as a mini-amphitheater where sound healing performances from artists around the world can be experienced. Sounds of birds, insects, and cascading water will stream from hidden speakers to add to the ambiance.
Sanctuaria serves as a tribute to the 543 vertebrate species which have become extinct since 1900-- a reminder that many more species could become extinct, including the human race if global warming continues at its current pace.
